Paragliding Over Istria: A Bird Eye View

Summary

Paragliding from the Ucka mountain range gives pilots and tandem passengers one of the most spectacular views in the Adriatic. On a clear day, the entire peninsula stretches below — from the sea in the west to the Kvarner Gulf in the east, with the coast of Italy visible in the distance.

Take-Off Points

The Ucka ridge, at around 1,200 to 1,400 metres, provides ideal launch conditions for paragliding. The predominant wind directions are predictable, and the terrain creates reliable thermals throughout the flying season.

  • Main launch from the Vojak area on the upper Ucka ridge
  • Landing areas in the valleys below the mountain
  • Season runs from April to October
  • Tandem flights available for non-pilots

The Experience

Tandem flights with a certified instructor last 20 to 40 minutes and require no previous experience. After a brief safety briefing and a short run off the hillside, you are airborne and soaring above one of Croatia most beautiful landscapes.

Nothing prepares you for the view of all Istria from above. The hill towns look like toys. The sea is every shade of blue at once.

Booking and Safety

  1. Book tandem flights through certified operators in Opatija or Lovran
  2. Minimum age typically 14; weight limits apply
  3. Flights weather-dependent — operators will reschedule if conditions are unsuitable
