The batana is Rovinj boat — a flat-bottomed wooden craft designed specifically for the shallow rocky waters around the town. For centuries, it was the vessel that sustained Rovinj fishing community, and it remains central to the town cultural identity today.
The Batana and the Fishing Tradition
The batana distinctive design — shallow, flat-bottomed, with a wide stern — allows it to navigate coastal rocks and be dragged up on shore without a harbour. It is rowed standing, in the Venetian style, and propelled by a distinctive lateen sail.
- Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
- Rovinj Batana Ecomuseum documents the tradition
- Evening batana parades in the harbour during summer
- Working fishermen still use batane alongside modern boats
A Fisherman Dawn
The pre-dawn departure from Rovinj harbour — a procession of lantern-lit boats heading out in the still dark — is one of the most evocative sights in Istria. The catch, brought back at sunrise, goes directly to the market and the town restaurants.
My father fished. His father fished. The sea gives, the sea takes, but it never leaves us. Rovinj without the batana is not Rovinj.
