In the 1960s, Groznjan was nearly empty — its medieval hilltop streets abandoned as residents moved to the coast for work. The Yugoslav authorities invited artists to take over the empty houses and studios, and an extraordinary cultural experiment was born.
The Art Colony Today
Today, Groznjan is one of the most atmospheric arts destinations in the Adriatic. Over 20 galleries and studios occupy restored medieval buildings, with an international community of artists, sculptors, jewellers, and musicians in residence each summer.
- Galleries in restored Gothic and Renaissance buildings
- International art workshops and summer music programs
- Annual Jeunesses Musicales summer academy
- Panoramic views over the Mirna Valley from the old town walls
The Architecture
Groznjan architectural heritage is exceptional even by Istrian standards. Venetian loggias, Romanesque church towers, and Gothic palace windows frame streets paved with irregular stone — all now animated by contemporary creative work.
Groznjan is living proof that art can save a place. What was dying is now thriving — and more authentic for it.
Visiting Groznjan
- Best visited on weekdays when galleries are open and crowds are minimal
- Summer evening concerts in the main square
- The village is tiny — plan for half a day minimum
